Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany after Berlin. The oldest evidence for the existence of the city dates back to the 7th century. In 1241 Hamburg belonged to one of the founders of the Hanseatic and is still an important industrial and trading location. The port is the 3rd largest in Europe and 8th worldwide. With Airbus, alongside Toulouse and Seattle, Hamburg is the third world’s leading location for civil aviation.
And you are not alone as a visitor to the city: Hamburg is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Germany, with more than 70 million day visitors, 4 million guests and 8 million overnight stays per year. Most popular sights to visit is the city centre with the wonderful view over the Alster lake, Hamburg's harbour with the St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken (jetties), the "sinful mile" The Reeperbahn in St. Pauli and famous buildings such as the new Elbphilharmonie or one of the oldest city’s landmark, the Hamburger "Michel". The main church, St. Michaelis, was destroyed several times over the centuries. It first construction dates back to the year 1647.
Major events attract regularly many visitors: the annual harbour birthday, the Harley Days or the Altona Fish Market on Sunday morning, the "Hamburger Dom" and the “Schlagermove” (hit move). Hamburg is the world's third largest musical location. In 2001, for example, started "The Lion King" and it is running continuously for 14 years now. More than 60 theatres, more than 60 museums and major fairs such as the "Hanseboot" (Boat fair) and the "INTERNORGA" which are held annually. The HSV and the FC St. Pauli are well known among football players, and other remarkable events are Europe’s largest bike race “Vattenfall Cyclassics”, Germany‘s most important tennis tournament “bet-at-home Open”, the “Deutsche Spring- und Dressur-Derby in the North” and the “Haspa Marathon Hamburg”. If you feel that’s too much, you just can turn around: In close proximity you will find the “Harburger Berge” (Harburg Mountains) and the Luneburg Heath, which wait to be explored – better: to be hiked.
